    UTMB PT Exercise Class

    Date/Time: February 8th from 1-2pm
    Location: McGuire Dent Recreation Center - 2222 28th St, Galveston
    Theme - dress up as your favorite movie character

    This class is for individuals with Ds of all ages and for those who need one to one assistance.

    These classes are designed and led by doctor of physical therapy students and supported by Dr. Laurie Farroni, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy and Pediatric Clinical Specialist.

    These classes are designed to meet participants at their individual levels of development and motor skills, and to promote inclusion and fun.

    Health and Wellness Program

    Special Strong FunFit Class

    Dates: Saturday February 1st & 15th 
    Time: 2-3pm
    Location: Anytime Fitness - 4420 W Main St Ste B League City, TX 77573

    The FunFit class is for individuals with Ds ages 13 and up without physical limitations, and do not require assistance.

    *If your teen or adult with Down syndrome currently attends multiple classes at Special Strong please Do Not register for this class so others have a chance to attend these classes. 

    This class will be held twice a month on a Saturday, you must be able to attend both classes, dates and times of classes will vary on a monthly basis, registration will be posted monthly so you will need to register each month, there is a maximum of 16 students per class.

    The exercise classes will be a mix of 3 of our Special Strong FunFit Group Classes:

    BootCamp, Kickboxing, Movement & Mobility

    Every class will incorporate our CBSE Fitness Model:

    Core, Balance, Flexibility

    Brain & Sensory

    Endurance

    Strength

    Safety is always our 1st priority, but having FUN while being healthy is a close 2nd!

    Our coaches empower each individual to participate to the best of their ability.  Knowing when to push them, but also knowing when someone may need some additional help or encouragement.

    This social is for Adults with Ds ages 18 and up and parents/caregivers only.

    The adults with Ds will play board games and card games, and will be served drinks, popcorn, waffle and GF waffle sticks, parents are on their own for drinks and snacks.

    This event is limited to 10 adults with Ds.

    Nutrition Class

    Date/Time: Tuesday February 18th from 6-715pm

    Location: Clear Lake Freeman Library - 16616 Diana Ln, Houston, TX 77062
    When you enter through the front door the meeting room will be on the left, there is a maximum of 59 attendee's, registration will close when limit is reached and waitlist will be enabled, this class is for the whole family.

    Families will learn about sustainable lifestyle changes to improve the overall health and well-being of individuals with Down syndrome and the entire family. 

    February’s nutrition class will cover the role of nutrition in our lives and why it is important. We will take a look at a balanced diet and the importance and role of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, fats) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) and reading food labels.

    GHFEDS Parent Education Meeting will be a Parents Panel for us all to share our experiences and knowledge we have gained in the following areas: medical, behavior,  educational, govt. benefits, medicaid waivers, employment, guardianship/alternatives, regression, potty training, long term care, summer camps, special olympics, and local programs.

    GHFEDS would like to invite your family in celebrating World Down Syndrome Day!

    We will be celebrating with a Silly Sock Dance on Saturday March 22nd from 6-8:30pm 

    Location: Verne Cox Multipurpose Recreation Center

     Wear your silly socks and dance the night away

     Entertainment includes DJ, dancing, crafts/games and a Silly Sock Parade

    Serving Chickfila nuggets/strips and grilled nuggets, sandwiches, chips, veggie/fruit tray, desserts, drinks and gluten free options available.

    In honor of WDSD, GHFEDS will donate $2000 for Down syndrome research to LuMind IDSC Foundation. The mission and vision of LuMind IDSC Foundation is we accelerate research to increase availability of therapeutic, diagnostic, and medical care options and we empower families through education, connections, and support. We envision a world where every person with Down syndrome thrives with improved health, independence, and opportunities to reach their fullest potential. LuMind IDSC serves as a bridge between the Down syndrome community and the research community.
